The Leica Geovid Max 10x42 has a laser rangefinder and a ballistics calculator built into a 10x42 binocular. Press the button and you get a reading in about 0.3 seconds. You choose how it reports: straight line-of-sight distance, Equivalent Horizontal Range for steep uphill or downhill shots, or a custom holdover worked out from your rifle profile.

The housing is die-cast magnesium with rubber armor, waterproof to 5 m, and weighs about 1,035 g (36.5 oz) without its CR2 battery. That's more than a plain 10x42; in exchange, you carry one device instead of two. Gun profiles, display settings and firmware updates go through the Leica Ballistics app over Bluetooth, and it can also take corrections from Kestrel and Garmin Foretrex units. Ranging Your Way

Press once for a single reading, or hold for about 2.5 seconds to scan as you follow a moving target. Target modes set which object it reads. Best is for open, unobstructed targets; First picks the nearest object, which helps with small targets up close; Last reads through brush to what's behind it. Extended mode trades a slightly longer measuring time for more reach.

Ballistics On Board

A built-in calculator uses inclination, temperature and air pressure measured at the moment of ranging. You enter wind speed and direction by hand for side corrections. A sub-display shows atmospheric conditions and the ballistics from your last shot.

Display and Power

The microLED display lets you choose a circle, square or cross reticle. Brightness has five steps or follows an ambient light sensor. Auto-off runs at 1, 3 or 5 minutes, and a tilt-based standby saves the battery between looks.
