Billingham began in 1973 with Martin and Ros Billingham working from home, crafting fishing and shooting bags by hand in their spare time while holding full-time jobs. By 1977, growing demand allowed them to rent a small unit and hire help. A pivotal moment came when New York photographers began using their fishing bags as camera bags, inspiring the creation of the System 1 camera bag, now the 550. Despite initial skepticism from camera shops, they marketed directly to photographers through ads and exhibitions, gaining recognition from prominent figures like Lord Lichfield. Over time, Billingham's reputation grew, leading to global distribution, collaborations with renowned camera brands, and features in films and magazines. Though the journey had challenges, the focus on quality, respect, and craftsmanship has made Billingham a trusted name in the photography world.
