The Summicron-M 66 f/2 is Leica's reinterpretation of the Elcan 66mm f/2, the lens Walter Mandler designed at Ernst Leitz Canada in the late 1960s for a US Navy reconnaissance contract. Around 200 originals were built. This one starts from the same optical design, reworked to current standards at 6 elements in 5 groups. Wide open at f/2 you get soft bokeh and high contrast; stopped down it does what the original was built to do, which is hold resolution on fine detail.

Handling is deliberately odd. The aperture ring turns the opposite way from every other M lens and the meter and feet scales are reversed, both carried over from the military version, so expect a few rolls of recalibrating your hands. The lens itself is small: 60.1 mm long, 60 mm across, about 456 g, E49 filter thread, screw-on hood. The run is 660 units worldwide, numbered on the front ring. If you are weighing this against a 50 or a 75 you already own, our team can talk through how 66mm actually sits between them.

Buy from an authorized Leica dealer like Leica Store SF to ensure a genuine product with full manufacturer warranty and expert support.
